Garage door won’t open

A garage-door technician can distinguish an opener or control issue from a spring, cable or track fault. A door that is crooked, dropping or partly detached needs prompt specialist attention.

What to do now

Keep safety first

Keep people away from a jammed or uneven door. Stop operating it. Do not adjust springs or cables, force it upward, or pull the release on a raised or unstable door; it may fall.

What could explain it?

  • Remote or control issue
  • Opener or power-supply fault
  • Broken spring or cable
  • Track obstruction or mechanical damage

These are possibilities to discuss with the professional, not a confirmed cause.

Safe information to collect

Describe whether the remote is silent, the motor clicks, or the door begins moving then stops. Record any loud bang and whether the door looks crooked. You can note a remote battery indication without opening the opener or touching electrical parts.

When it needs urgent attention

An unsupported door, loose cable, damaged track or dropping panel is a keep-clear situation. Do not walk under it to retrieve a car. B&D warns against forcing a door with a failed spring; arrange specialist help and alternative transport.

Questions for the technician

Ask whether the price covers attendance, labour, matched springs or cables, adjustment, testing and disposal. Explain if access to the garage is blocked. If fixed wiring is faulty, electrical work needs an appropriately licensed electrician.

What the professional may do next

  1. Record model and symptoms from a safe position
  2. Assess the door balance and hardware professionally
  3. Quote the failed components
  4. Test operation and safety devices after repair

What can change the total

Door size, damaged tracks, number of components, emergency attendance and replacement opener compatibility all change the scope. Ask for repair and replacement options only after the fault has been assessed.

Before booking

  • Ask about experience with your door and opener, and confirm any building or electrical credentials needed for the proposed work.

Tenants should report the problem promptly. Responsibility depends on the cause, agreement, common property and local rules; do not assume the person who notices it must pay.
